![]() ![]() After last summer’s Equifax breach, perhaps companies are learning that trying to bury bad news or delaying its announcement can lead to disaster. In the wake of this incident, tech experts have generally praised Under Armour for quickly acknowledging the incident and addressing it publicly soon after discovering it. Users should also avoid clicking on links in emails or downloading attachments. They also urged users to review their accounts for “suspicious activity” and be cautious of emails or other communications that ask for your personal data or refer you to a web page. “The company will be requiring MyFitnessPal users to change their passwords and is urging users to do so immediately.” Review account The notice contains recommendations for MyFitnessPal users regarding account security steps they can take to help protect their information,” Under Armour said in a statement. “Four days after learning of the issue, the company began notifying the MyFitnessPal community via email and through in-app messaging. They recommended that all users change their passwords immediately. Under Armour said in its statement that they’re investigating the case, but would only say that an “unauthorized party” was found to have obtained the data. (“Hashed” passwords, by the way, are converted to a seemingly random string of characters by encryption software, to make the real passwords more difficult to obtain.) Change your password The breach (which was discovered on March 25) potentially revealed users’ names, email addresses and “hashed” passwords, but not more sensitive information such as credit card numbers or Social Security numbers. Under Armour announced this week that hackers had compromised the company’s security in February, jeopardizing the personal information of more than 150 million users. Under Armour reported that the app’s users doubled in number in a short time, and MyFitnessPal is now among the top-grossing apps on all platforms. In 2015, sports apparel maker Under Armour spent a reported $475 million to buy MyFitnessPal, which at the time had already spent a decade building its user base to more than 80 million users.
